Timing is the whole game
Naturalisation is not difficult to understand. It is difficult to time. Apply a few weeks early and it is refused, the Home Office fee is gone, and you start again — the fee is not refundable and there is no partial credit for a near miss.
The rules we check against your history
Residence of three years if you are married to a British citizen, five years otherwise. No more than 450 days outside the UK across those five years, or 270 across three. No more than 90 days outside in the final twelve months. Twelve months holding Settled Status before you apply, unless you are the spouse of a British citizen.
Then good character, which is broader than people expect: it takes in cautions and convictions, but also tax affairs, immigration history, and anything the Home Office considers dishonest. Something you have half-forgotten is worth mentioning to us early rather than leaving it to be found.

We calculate your absences against your actual travel history rather than your recollection of it, confirm the earliest date you can safely apply, prepare the form and the referee declarations, and track the application through to your ceremony invitation.
