What Settled Status actually gives you
Settled Status is indefinite leave to remain. It does not expire, it does not need renewing, and it is what makes you eligible to apply for British citizenship. Pre-Settled Status does none of those things — it is a five-year holding position, and it runs out.
Where these applications go wrong
Almost always on absences. The rule is straightforward on paper: you need five years of continuous residence, and you cannot be outside the UK for more than six months in any rolling twelve-month period. In practice people forget a long trip home, or misremember which year it fell in, or assume a period of illness abroad was covered when it was not.
The Home Office cross-checks what you declare against HMRC and DWP records. Where those records are thin — self-employment, cash work, a period of study, time as a dependant — the gap has to be filled with other evidence, and it is far better to find that out before you apply than after.
What we do
We build your residence history month by month, identify every gap before the Home Office does, and tell you plainly whether to apply now or wait. If waiting is the safer answer, we will say so.
